What is a boxy t-shirt?
A boxy t-shirt is cut wide and straight through the body and shorter than a regular tee, with dropped shoulders. It makes a square shape and hangs away from you instead of following you.
Boxy vs oversized vs regular
The three words describe different proportions, not just different sizes.
| Fit | Body | Length | Shoulder |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular | Follows the body | Covers the belt | At the shoulder |
| Oversized | Loose everywhere | Long, often below the hip | Dropped |
| Boxy | Wide and straight | Short, at the belt | Dropped |
Oversized adds room everywhere. Boxy adds width but keeps the length short, so the hem sits at the belt and the shirt reads as a clean rectangle.
How a boxy tee should fit
- Shoulders. The seam falls below your shoulder, on the upper arm. That is intended.
- Chest. Clearly wider than your body, with no pull across the chest or back when you reach forward.
- Length. The hem lands around the belt line. Much longer and it becomes an oversized tee; much shorter and it is cropped.
- Sleeves. Short and wide, ending at the upper arm.
Which size to take
Take your usual size for the boxy fit. If you are taller than about 6 ft (1.83 m) and want more length, size up: you gain length and width together. Avoid sizing down to make it neater; the shape depends on the width.
The surest check is a shirt you already own. Lay it flat and measure straight across the chest, 2.5 cm below the armholes, and from the highest point of the shoulder to the hem. Then compare with the size table of the shirt you want; the Tee 240 page has a helper that does the comparison.
Boxy t-shirts for women
Most boxy tees, ours included, are unisex and follow men’s sizing. For the boxy shape, most women take one or two sizes down from their usual men’s size; XS and S exist for that. Your usual size gives a looser, oversized look. A front tuck into high-waisted trousers or jeans keeps the proportions balanced.
How to wear it
Untucked over wide or straight trousers, where the short hem keeps your legs long. With a front tuck. Or under an open overshirt or jacket, where the square body sits flat. Heavier jersey matters here: at 240 gsm, about 7.1 oz, the fabric holds the line instead of collapsing. What gsm means.
Questions
What is a boxy t-shirt?
A t-shirt cut wide and straight through the body and shorter than a regular tee, with dropped shoulders and short sleeves that sit at the upper arm. It hangs away from the body instead of following it.
What is the difference between boxy and oversized?
Oversized is about size: more room everywhere, and usually more length. Boxy is about proportion: wide but short, so the shirt makes a square shape.
Should I size up or down in a boxy t-shirt?
Take your usual size for the intended fit. Size up only if you want more length, which helps if you are taller than about 6 ft. Sizing down makes it closer to a regular fit and loses the shape.
How should a boxy t-shirt fit women?
Most boxy tees follow men's sizing. Women usually take one or two sizes down for the boxy shape, or their usual size for a looser, oversized look.
Why does a heavier fabric suit a boxy cut?
Heavier jersey drapes less, so the shirt stands away from the body instead of clinging to it. Light jersey tends to collapse and lose the square line.
